Disclaimer: All the opinions expressed are solely mine and by no means are these the only 5 best bollywood movies of all time.
Ok having said that let me now start with the list of 5 Best movies for some one who hasn’t ever seen a bollywood movie.
These are some of my favorite movies:
1) Sholay
Sholay(which means “flames” in hindi) is one of those Indian movies which went on to break all records during its time. In fact in Mumbai’s Minerva theatre it was shown continuosly for 5 years which is a record till date not broken by any other movie. Now you might ask me what makes this movie to be one of my all time favorites? The answer to that lies in the story, the great acting by all(Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachan, Dharmendra, Hema malini, Jaya Bhaduri (Bachan), Asrani, Jagdeep and others) and the Direction by Ramesh Sippy. If one likes a great story, action, comedy, songs, dialogues or simply great acting then this movie has it. This is a movie that has to be cherished and hopefully not tried to be repeated (which was tried with no success).

2) Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (which means “something just happens” in hindi) is one of those which I liked a lot. Shah Rukh Khan(SRK) the hero of the movie started out with negative roles in movies like Darr and Baazigar but his incredible acting skills launched him to become one of the best bollywood actors in recent times(He is known as the Bollywood Badshah(emperor) which for a long time after Amitabh Bachan nobody lay a claim to). Besides the hero (SRK) who did a great job the leading heroine Kajol also did some fantastic acting. Kajol in the first half of the movie acts like the Tomboy and the second half of the movie acts like the demure traditional girl. Besides them Rani Mukherjee was launched in this movie and she just lit up the stage with her screen presence. Salman Khan also did a cameo role in this movie. Their are lots of twists and turns before the usual predictable ending takes place.

3) Lagaan
Lagaan (which means “land tax” in Hindi) is one of those movies set in the victorian period of the British Raj. This movie was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It takes the game of cricket and where the result determines whether the peasants have to pay their land tax or exempted from it. Aamir khan who plays as the main hero did a fantastic job. Gracy singh as the heroine did a good job and one of the songs in which she danced was one of the most graceful choreography of folk dances that was ever seen. Besides that their have been couple of foreign actors like Rachel Shelley(who teaches and encourages the peasant) and as her brother Paul Blackthorne also performed very well. It has a feel good factor and a very well made movie.

4) A Wednesday
The film opens with Mumbai Police Commissioner Prakash Rathod taking a respite after a jog, describing in a voice-over that he is going to retire from office the following day, and how numerous people have been recently questioning him about the most challenging case he had to deal with in his entire career, and how he has been deliberately evading such questions. As his voice-over ends the film switches into a narrative, showing the events that occurred on a certain Wednesday. An unnamed man is shown to strategically carry a travel bag, assumed to be explosives, in the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and proceeding to place the bag, under the false pretense of lodging an FIR, in the toilet of a police station located near the Mumbai Police headquarters. He then calls up Rathod and informs him that 5 bombs have been placed in different locations throughout Mumbai, which are programmed to explode simultaneously within four hours unless the Commissioner gives in to his demands and releases four militants. In response, Rathod immediately alerts his team involved in intelligence research and surveillance, tapping all the available resources in gathering preliminary information and tracing the location of the caller. Meanwhile, the caller tips off television news reporter Naina Roy, telling her to reach the police headquarters immediately as it is going to be “the most important day of her life”. Rathod suspects the anonymous caller to be bluffing, but his doubts are dispelled as the caller, to prove his seriousness and the police force’s helplessness, reveals that a bomb has been planted in the police station right opposite to the Police headquarters. He tries to trigger the bomb through a cell phone, but it is located in the nick of time and defused.
Meanwhile, as Rathod and his team desperately try to locate the caller, the four militants demanded by the caller are taken to the location specified by the caller.
At this point the story takes a remarkable twist proving everyone’s belief about the caller’s intentions as wrong and ends on an idealistic note, with Rathod admitting that they all knew the common man was disturbed because of the insecure environment and the incompetence of the governing authorities but he never imagined a common man to go to such lengths and have the guts to do something like that.

5) Mother India (1957)
One саn nοt forget Mother India due tο іtѕ rich content. Aurat, a Mehboob Khan film mаdе іn 1940 wаѕ mаdе again іntο thіѕ well known ѕhοw. Sunil Dutt аnd Nargis Dutt dеѕсrіbеd thе vital font іn thе film, whісh gave a clear picture οf thе ancient India. Thе main character іn thіѕ ѕhοw іѕ a poor village woman wіth high moral values аnd a strong wіll power. Even thеn ѕhе murders hеr son, аt last, іn order tο fulfill hеr promise given tο thе landlord. Thе film wаѕ selected аѕ one οf thе 5 Best Foreign Language films іn Oscars іn thе year 1958.
